What is Silver Diamine Fluoride?

Silver Diamine Fluoride or SDF is a recently FDA approved antibiotic that studies have shown to pause the progression of cavities in children. SDF works as an anti-microbial agent that strengthens the layer beneath the surface of your teeth called dentin. SDF kills the cavity causing bacteria, and strengthens that part of the tooth.

Traditionally, cavities were, and still continue to be treated by drilling into the tooth decay followed by filling it with either a white composite or metal. This new alternative noninvasive treatment is perfect for children who are maybe unable to tolerate procedures due to special needs or pre-cooperative behaviors.

Why Consider Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatment

SDF is highly effective in helping to prevent further tooth decay. It is a quick dental procedure, which is ideal for children with special needs who may have difficulty cooperating for dental procedures. The treatment can aid in stopping cavities and tooth decay from worsening and slow the progression and delay need for more involved dental procedures.

Benefits of Silver Diamine Fluoride

This procedure is optimal for children with excessive decay, children with special needs, and children who are anxious about visiting their dentist. Previously, special needs children have had to be but under anesthesia for the dentist to treat cavities, but SDF offers an alternative to anesthesia. Silver diamine fluoride is:

  • Painless
  • Quick to apply
  • For halting decay
  • Non-invasive
  • Safe
  • Affordable
  • Does stain the cavity black

Please take note that SDF cannot be treated on patients who are allergic to silver and those who have sores or raw areas on their gums.
